Oscars: Brave Wins Tight Animation Race

Disney-Pixar pic trumps "Wreck-It Ralph"

Walt Disney’s “Brave” has won the animated feature Oscar in one of the tightest races at this year’s Academy Awards.

“Brave” won out over two other Disney’s entries — “Frankenweenie” and “Wreck-It Ralph” — along with Laika/Focus Features’ “ParaNorman” “Brave” and Sony-Aardman’s “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.”

Director Mark Andrews came on stage in a green kilt to accept the award for the tale of a misfit girl in the Scottish highlands and director Brenda Chapman credited her daughter with inspiring the film’s lead character.

It was the seventh Disney title to win the animated Oscar in the dozen years since the Academy created the category — with Pixar winning six of those trophies.

“Brave” grossed over $550 million worldwide and won both the Golden Globe and Bafta.

Disney went two-for-two in the animated categories as John Kahrs won the animated short OIscar for the worldless “Paperman.”
