Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have joined “Monster” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The two A-listers join previously announced stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming season of the anthology series, which will focus on the Menéndez brothers. The season is officially titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” and is slated to debut later in 2024.
Erik (Koch) and Lyle Menéndez (Chavez) were convicted of the murders of their parents, José (Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez (Sevigny), in 1996. Authorities argued the brothers committed the murders to inherit their father’s fortune, while the brothers maintained that they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse.

“Monster” was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Both serve as executive producers along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. The first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. It proved to be a massive success for Netflix, ranking as one of its most-watched English language series of all time. Netflix subsequently renewed it for two more seasons as an anthology series.
The role reunites Sevigny and Murphy, who have collaborated on multiple projects in the past. She appeared in multiple seasons of “American Horror Story” and is also starring in the upcoming second season of “Feud” at FX. Recently, she completed work on the film “Bonjour Tristesse” starring opposite Claes Bang. Her other notable roles include starring in the film “Boys Don’t Cry” and the HBO series “Big Love.” She earned an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for her work in “Boys Don’t Cry” and a Golden Globe win for “Big Love.” She has also starred in TV shows like “Bloodline,” “The Girl From Plainville,” and “Russian Doll.”
Bardem won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in the Coen brothers’ film “No Country for Old Men.” He has been nominated three other times in his career to date — for “Before Night Falls,” “Biutiful,” and “Being the Ricardos.” He is also known for his English-language roles in films like “Dune,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” and “Skyfall,” and Spanish-language films like “Los Lunes al Sol” and “Mar Adentro.” His role as José Menéndez will mark his first regular English-language television role.
Sevigny is repped by WME and Circle of Confusion. Bardem is repped by WME and Goodman Genow.
