The footage gives fans their first look at Angourie Rice as the new version of Cady Heron, and Reneé Rapp as queen bee Regina George.

The initial reactions to the trailer on social media ranged from surprise that it's a musical (based on a 2017 stage adaptation of "Mean Girls"), to dismay that it isn't a direct sequel to the original.

But the biggest shock for people on social media appears to be a single line of marketing that has sent millennials into an existential crisis.

To make it clear that this is a modern take on "Mean Girls," the trailer says: "This isn't your mother's 'Mean Girls.'"

That sound you just heard is an entire generation of fans gasping.

As you can imagine, people took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their reactions after being reminded that the original "Mean Girls" is almost 20 years old.

Jennifer Lawrence's recent meme-worthy moment on "Hot Ones" was a popular response:

Another apt reaction? The original Regina George, played by Rachel McAdams, screaming.

Others, however, questioned just how old the marketing team thinks fans of the original are.

While Cady and Regina will be played by new actors, fans of the original can expect some familiar faces in the new adaptation.

Tina Fey will once again play the girls' teacher, Ms. Norbury, and Tim Meadows returns as Principal Duvall.

"Mean Girls" hits theaters on January 12, 2024.
