Marilyn Manson Founding Guitarist Daisy Berkowitz Dies at 49

Guitarist Scott Putesky, who as Daisy Berkowitz was a founding member of Marilyn Manson, has died at the age of 49 after a struggle with colon cancer, according to a post from that band and collaborators Jack Off Jill.

“Scott Putesky and I made great music together,” Manson wrote on Instagram. “We had our differences over the years, but I will always remember the good times more.Everyone should listen to ‘Man That You Fear’ in his honour. That was our favorite.” Jack Off Jill quoted a Blondie song in its tribute: “Saying goodbye to Scott, friend, band mate, artist , hero. RIP Scott — ‘always touched by your presence dear.’”

Putesky and Manson met in Florida in the late 1980s and formed Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. The group was signed by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor to his Nothing label in 1993 and released its debut album, “Portrait of an American Family” the following year, along with the EP “Smells Like Children,” the latter of which featured their first hit, a cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” He left the band during the recording of their second full-length, “Antichrist Superstar,” over creative differences, but plays on the album and is credited on six songs, although he sued the band later for unpaid royalties.

Manson, who released his 10th studio album “Heaven Upside Down” earlier this month, has been in the news for other reasons in recent weeks: He was injured onstage in New York in an accident involving a stage prop, breaking his leg and forcing the cancellation of several weeks of shows, and late last week band bassist Twiggy Ramirez was accused of rape by his former girlfriend, Jack Off Jill’s Jessicka Addams.
